Love That Dog
What is a poem? What do poems mean, and do we try to deconstruct them too much? These are just some of the questions you’ll be asking yourself after reading Love That Dog.
In the book, which is written entirely as a narrative poem, a young boy is asked by his teacher to write some verse, and is hesitant, getting himself caught up in definitions of what a ‘proper’ poem is. When his teacher shows him a host of different poems, he realises that poetry can be anything to anyone. By the time his poem about a beloved pet inspires his fellow classmates, he’s well and truly hooked on composition.
No matter what age you are, you’ll find it difficult to resist Love That Dog. It’s charming and moving, a real testament to the power poetry can have when it comes unfiltered from the heart. It’s clever without being pompous, and a potentially liberating text for anyone who thinks that poetry is somehow not for them.
