Have you ever received a family heirloom and wondered about the person who first owned it?
That’s exactly what happens to Ross when his grandmother hands over her father’s precious box. In it, he finds an old pair of football boots, a Heart of Midlothian football strip and a photograph of Jack, Ross’s great-grandfather.
Alternating between present day Edinburgh where Ross and his teammates are suffering an abysmal season as Bruntsfield Primary’s P7 football team, and the early months of WWI, Soldier’s Game tells the story of the formation and early days of the Royal Scots 16th Battalion, also known as the Hearts Battalion. It gives us a sense of life in 1914 Edinburgh and the popular attitudes to war at that time using historical fact and fictional characters.
This book should appeal to anyone with an interest in the glorious game and especially ‘Jambo’ fans everywhere, or anyone who loves to soak up our history and heritage.
