When their mother dies during the First World War, young James, William and Belle are left at the mercy of Mrs Carter, a downstairs neighbour. She’s managed to persuade the whole street that she’s a good Samaritan and nice person, but the children soon find out that she is really not what she seems. When Mrs Carter starts saying she might put the children into a home, James decides that they’d be better off fending for themselves. Instead of sitting around and hoping for the best, the children set off by train in search of their father, a soldier who has been fighting at the front.

The book is based around the true story of Scotland’s worst train disaster and helps to paint a very vivid picture of what life might have been like during wartime. Join James and his siblings as they try to take their fate into their own hands.
